How the Barcode Simplified Life

Posted December 21, 2017

barcode-616035_1280In 1974 a pack of gum was purchased using the first ever barcode. Since then the use of barcodes has skyrocketed and has taken many forms of symbologies. The symbology of a barcode includes the encoding of the message in the bars and spaces, including any start and stop markers plus the size of the quiet zone (a blemish free space around the code to help readers locate it) that is required to be before and after the barcode. There are a few different types of barcode symbologies from the linear Code 128 and Code 39 to the newer 2D QR Codes, Data Matrix, and Micro PDF.

type-of-barcodes

What has the barcode done for this world? It’s made life easier. Its helped the retail industry keep check of the number of products they have in stock and a way to see what products sell at higher volumes. More importantly its helped consumers get in and out of stores quicker by dramatically improving the check out line. Imagine a world in which you would have to wait until the cashier looked up every single item you wanted to purchase? In that scenario the checkout lines would be ridiculous, luckily the barcode is here to save us from that nightmare.

Retail is just one of the many industries that barcodes has helped improve; another is the healthcare industry which has greatly benefited from the barcode. In the healthcare industry you’ll find barcodes on patient samples and the wristbands patients wear. There’s systems in place that would automatically generate a new barcode every time a patient has their blood drawn, making it so that the blood sample can be tracked from the hospital floor to the laboratory for testing. Human error of course is still possible, but with the use of barcodes those errors have been greatly minimized.

Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) Mandate

Posted October 2, 2017

healthcare-2dWhat you need to know?

On November 27, 2013, Congress enacted the Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA), which includes the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). The DSCSA outlines steps to build an electronic system to identify, track and trace certain prescription drugs as they are distributed in the United States. This legislation was enacted in order to transform the pharmaceutical supply chain through serialization and improve patient safety.

Manufacturers, wholesalers, re-packagers and pharmacies have been required to implement lot-level management since 2015. Starting in November 2017, phase II of the DSCSA implementation requires manufacturers and re-packagers to serialize packages of drug products using a GS1 product identifier (either GTIN or NDC), serial number, lot number and expiration date, and embed this information into a 2D Datamatrix barcode. In November 2019, wholesalers must accept only serialized products and must verify unique product identifiers. By November 2020, pharmacists must meet the same requirements. Lastly, by November 2023, all information will be required to be made available that would allow supply chain partners to trace the ownership back to the initial manufacturer or re-packager.

What does a DSCSA solution do?

Our DSCSA hardware and software solution is focused on developing a traceability solution that incorporates transaction management, repository of historical snapshots of data for retrieval, and detects exceptions and provides easy to use visibility to traceability data in a matter of seconds.

What are the benefits of DSCSA?

Besides being in compliance, patients and supply chain companies are able to take advantage of the benefits of DSCSA, such as:

  • Improved patient safety and care
  • Compliance with serialization requirements helps move the industry ahead with better traceability and accountability for the origin, chain of custody, delivery, and availability of authentic, original prescription drugs
  • Improved accessibility to patients for the drugs they need and assurance that they are exactly the drugs prescribed by their physicians
  • Reduction of counterfeit drugs by having serialized identifiers
  • Maintaining profits for the industry providers against counterfeit products
  • Enables quick and accurate recalls of drugs, if needed
  • Increased efficiency throughout the supply chain by optimizing inventory tracking through serialization

What do I need to be in compliance?

Converting manufacturing lines from lot-based to unit-based serialization represents an investment in software and hardware. Barcode scanners and barcode label printers are a necessity to print and scan a GS1 2D Datamatrix barcode label. Wireless networking is an option for manufacturers looking to future-proof their operations. While all facilities present different challenges, service providers like Barcodes, Inc. can provide a consultation to ensure all the technology is identified and implemented in accordance to compliance regulations.

While the deadline remains the same, the FDA has issued a one year reprieve, meaning that the agency will not take action against manufacturers who do not affix or imprint the product identifier to their packages until after November 26, 2018.

What Are the Advantages of Thermal Transfer Printing?

Posted June 13, 2017

Choosing the right printing method for labels can always be confusing at first. With options for direct thermal and thermal transfer it really comes down to how long you want the label to last and in what kind of environment. Thermal transfer provides more options for longevity and durability but not without a cost.

Thermal Transfer – Advantages

  • Image durability. It’s the label type needed for harsh environments.
  • Superb resolution of bar codes, text and graphics.
  • Longer printhead life compared to direct thermal printers.
  • Can be color depending on color of label – black, blue, red, green, white.

Thermal Transfer – Disadvantages

  • Dual media needed – labels and ribbons. More to purchase and store.
  • Ribbons can be tricky to load.
  • Must match ribbon to facestock.
  • Single pass ribbon can be wasteful if little is printed on long labels.

Barthes Co Uses AirTrack DP-1 and KoamTac KDC to Manage Shipping and Sales

Posted November 17, 2016

AirTrack DP-1 PrinterBarthes Co is a technology company that focuses on repairs for various types of devices. Before reaching out to Barcodes, Inc. they printed thousands of shipping labels using an inkjet printer, but quickly realized that their printers were breaking down and simply not keeping up with the thousands of shipping labels that were required to be printed. Additionally, they wanted to automate a process that required each of their sales representatives to manually track their sales orders against sales goals.

Barcodes, Inc. recommended the AirTrack DP-1 desktop printer to manage the printing of their shipping labels, which was not only more cost effective, but also more reliable and faster than an inkjet printer. In addition to the barcode printer, Barcodes supplied Barthes Co with flood coated barcode labels, which helps simplify product identification while making picking and organization much easier. Finally, Barcodes, Inc. recommended the KoamTac KDC410, a sled for the Apple iPhone, which was compatible with the Barthes Co sales tracking software that was used internally. The KDC410 allowed sales representatives to scan the barcode on a purchase order, which in turn would update their sales progress and allow them to track everything from their iPhone no matter where they were located. Barthes Co saw an immediate boost in production and employee satisfaction.
