Combined Printing, Point of Sale Solution Yields Competitive Edge

Star Micronics announced that software company Keep It Simple Software has certified Star Micronics’ TSP100 family of thermal receipt printers, which includes the TSP100ECO, TSP100U, and the TSP100GT, as well as, Star’s TSP650, TSP700II, SP700 and SP500 to operate with Version 3.0 of its KissPOS (formerly RegistWARE) point of sale software.

Play a Racing Game on Your Receipt Printer

Posted June 20, 2011

Receipt racer combines input and output devices in an unusual way to make a complete game. It was made during the “Let’s feed the future workshop”, organized by creativeapplications.net as a part of the 2011 OFFF Festival in Barcelona.

The game is played on a thermal receipt printer using rolls of thermal receipt paper up to 50 yards long. According to the author, “Ecologically it’s pretty much a disaster, just like any real car.”

As a company that sells receipt paper and receipt printers, we hope this game becomes the most popular thing since Angry Birds. 🙂

Success of Apple iPad Creating Demand for Business Tablet Computers

Posted June 20, 2011

An article from Computerworld highlights the demand for tablets in enterprise environments:

The intent is there for business use. Almost 30% of iPad users say they now use their iPad as their primary computer, and one survey has shown that over half of would-be users plan to “use a new tablet device like the iPad to conduct work.” But will they really use tablets for work? And, if they do, how can IT manage all those devices?

Well, some companies have had tablets integrated into their IT infrastructure for years. Windows tablets, from companies like Fujitsu, Panasonic and Intermec, have been used in vertical markets for almost two decades. The reason most of you have never heard of them is that, as the experts at Pen Computing put it, “The Tablet PC never really caught on, in part due to technological issues and in part due to Microsoft’s inconsistent attention to the platform.”

Things have changed. Thanks to the iPad (and arguably Apple’s ability to make any technology seem cool and trend-setting), tablets and touch are no longer just for vertical markets such as healthcare, point-of-sale, field service and logistics. Now, users want them for everyday Internet and office use.

CognitiveTPG CRx Printer Improves Efficiency of Pharmacy Workflow

Posted June 16, 2011

Challenge

J & D Pharmacy has been in business for more than 30 years. As an independently owned pharmacy, J & D Pharmacy owner Don Grove understands the pressure to provide superior customer service, added value and combat increasing competition. Fortunately Mr. Grove is a technology adopter, not afraid to try anything that will improve business and customer satisfaction overall.

Scenario

When J & D Pharmacy set out to replace its Pharmacy Management software they were also looking for ways to improve workflow in the pharmacy operation. J & D Pharmacy chose Computer-Rx because it was the most user friendly Windows-based software system and because they offered excellent support.

This level of support went beyond technical support. Computer-Rx recommended that J & D Pharmacy replace its Lexmark laser printers with the CognitiveTPG CRx printer for printing the prescription labels. It was not difficult to convince Mr. Grove that the CRx thermal label printer was the best solution for his operation.

Solution

“When you are printing over 10,000 prescription labels a month it is important to optimize the workflow to save time. We saw the CRx printer as a perfect fit for a stand alone solution in our pharmacy operation,” said Jennifer Jelinek, Director of Pharmacy Operations at J & D Pharmacy.

While workflow is important, the driving force behind making this technology upgrade was the cost savings both in terms of the cost of the barcode labels and the cost from the downtime.

“We found that the printers paid for themselves within a month and the technicians were spending more time filling prescriptions than fixing a laser printer jam,” said Don Grove, J & D Pharmacy owner.

Star Receipt Printer Helps Improve Customer Service at the Sunglasses Shop

Posted June 16, 2011

The Sunglasses Shop bills itself as a customer-driven establishment where shoppers come first. The family-owned “Mom and Pop” store offers 2,500 pairs of sunglasses in a wide range of brands, styles and prices, as well as sunglass-related items.

After installing a Star TSP700 thermal receipt printer, store personnel can quickly and easily generate receipts that show where, when and at what price shoppers bought their sunglasses and/or accessories. Customers who need subsequent assistance with their purchases or have general questions need only refer to their receipt and bring it to the store for assistance; there is, states Keel, no chance that they are dealing with a merchant that isn’t on the up-and-up. Two-color receipt printing occurs at a high speed of 7.09 inches per second, while such features as “Drop in & Print” paper loading and an easy-to-change, cartridge-type interface minimizes printing delays. A logo storage utility allows logos to be added to receipts without difficulty.

Not long ago, The Sunglass Shop upgraded its point of sale system and needed to install printer drivers in its TSP700 printer so that the two devices would interface with each other. Keel tried to do the job alone, but was unsuccessful. A quick telephone call to Star Micronics’ technical support department solved the problem. Tech support personnel walked Keel through the process, and everything was up and running within minutes.

“Again, we can print receipts on demand with no trouble,” Keel concludes. “That leads to better customer service”—just what The Sunglasses Shop on Ocracoke is all about.

Datalogic Power³ Parallel Processors Help Datalogic Falcon X3 and Elf Mobile Computers Run Faster and Last Longer

Posted June 16, 2011

Datalogic’s newest generation of mobile computers, the Falcon X3 and Elf PDA, deliver real time performance levels while extending battery life. How has Datalogic done this while at the same time addressing the need for converged devices with a host of technologies?

The Datalogic Power³ architecture splits the user interfacing and system level activities between two different processors. This follows a similar principle to dual core processors in modern computers. User interfacing threads go on a main processor clocked at speeds in 100s of MHz while system level tasks are managed by a co-processor running at roughly 10% of the main processor speed. This focuses the main processor on providing a maximized user interface while the co-processor handles system level items in the background.

The Datalogic Power³ parallel processor approach greatly improves user efficiency and battery life. Applications can move at the user’s speed with little to no lag time between application windows or task direction from ERP systems. An added benefit comes from device autonomy with the Power³ architecture lowering the device total cost of ownership through longer lasting batteries, both over the shift and lifetime.
