RFID Provides Significant Savings and Accuracy for Hospitals
Hospital administrators are finding that inexpensive and unobtrusive radio frequency identification tags are saving thousands of dollars while increasing quality of care and patient satisfaction.
At the brand-new, 58-bed Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance in Fort Worth, everything that moves is being tagged, including high-value assets, wristbands on patients and the badges of all staff members.
Over the last year, RFID has saved the Texas Health Alliance $65,000 per month just in rental fees, said Kathi Cox, a project coordinator at the hospital’s parent company Texas Health Resources.
The Saslong Classic Gardena-Gröden World Cup Ski Organizational Committee Chooses Datalogic for Access Control
Overview
The ski slopes of Val Gardena are among the longest in the world, using a state-of-the-art safety system with advanced technology. Thanks to this modern system, Val Gardena’s slopes are considered some of the fastest, most spectacular ski runs in the World Cup, making them a favorite of ski aficionados.
Every year during the winter season, the Val Gardena region of Italy hosts the Saslong Classic Garden-Gröden ski competition. Thousands of fans from all over the world gather in this region of Italy to cheer on the athletes that participate.
The Challenge
The Saslong Classic Gardena-Gröden Organizational Committee gave fans the opportunity to order tickets online and print them out at home this year for the first time, thanks to changes made to fiscal laws permitting internet ticket sales. However, an electronic access control system certified by CNR (the National Center of Research) or other recognized Institute and approved by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency) had to be implemented. Since a ticket can be used for access to one or more areas of the event, it was fundamental that the access control system included a method for validating the ticket at each entrance. Juniper Extensible Solution, a system integrator from Cavalese, Trento, was awarded the job of creating an access control system that could fulfill all the conditions required by law and be innovative from a technological point of view, keeping in consideration the magnitude of the event and the environment in which it would take place.
DPM Software Update for the 70-Series & CK3X Computers
Intermec has released a software update providing Direct Part Marking (DPM) capability is now available for 70 Series and CK3X mobile computers that are configured with the EA30 scan engine and V1.50 system software.
What is DPM?
DPM puts a lifetime identification mark permanently into an item. The ID is typically a serial number or other information that uniquely identifies that item, paving the way for total lifecycle traceability. DPM with a Data Matrix or other barcode symbology makes it practical to identify almost anything, including small, hard-to-label items. DPM also makes it practical to instantly access essential information about the item throughout its life cycle and throughout the supply chain— even in challenging environments where traditional barcode systems won’t work.

Barcodes Help Provide The Complete History of Aomori Apples
The Aomori prefectural government and local apple farmers plan to introduce a barcode system that will allow customers to check the history of each apple they buy. The move was prompted by growing calls for safer food, particularly in foreign countries.
Aomori Prefecture, a prime apple growing area in northern Japan, is seeking to expand the export of its apples to foreign markets. The new system will use the very common QR Code, a two-dimensional barcode. QR codes can be read by mobile phones, giving the customer information on where the apple came from and how it was cared for, such as how often pesticides were used, and even providing a photo and message from the farmer who grew the fruit. The data will be available in Japanese, Chinese and English.
