Windows CE and Windows Embedded Handheld End of Life Cycle

Honeywell Android Barcode Mobile Computer There is no need to panic just yet but any business that is currently using devices with Windows CE or Windows Embedded Handheld should start to plan for the future. Starting in 2018 through 2020, Microsoft is phasing out support of their Windows Embedded Operating Systems you find on many mobile devices. Windows-based OS are very common especially in the case of more rugged handheld devices, so as you replace these devices you will want to consider changing to some of the alternate OS to future-proof your investment.

  • June 10, 2018 – Windows Embedded CE 6.0 will be End of Life
  • June 9, 2019 –  Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld will be End of Life
  • January 14, 2020 – Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 will be End of Life

3 years till 2020 isn’t really that far away. Preparing your upgrade strategy now will prevent a lot of headaches later and won’t slow down your business.

Android Lollipop for the Zebra TC70/TC75

Ever since the initial release, the Zebra TC75/TC70 Series has become one of the most popular mobile computers due to its convenient form factor and robust feature set. With over 200,000 unit deployed the TC75/TC70 are helping businesses of all types improve daily efficiencies and empower their workforce.

In order to better serve their customers Zebra has announced that Android v5.1 Lollipop will soon be available for the TC7x Series. The upgraded Android OS is expected to be available for download on Zebra’s Support site on approximately August 22, 2016 for TC70 and August 30, 2016 for TC75.

All future devices will have the newest Android OS installed but for customers preferring the older OS versions a simple ‘back-rev’ to their OS version will be available.

Seagull Scientific’s BarTender 9.2 End of Support

In the process of making their BarTender software one of the leading label applications, Seagull Scientific is continually updating and improving  features in BarTender. As new versions are released previous ones eventually cannot continue to be supported. 

As of September 1st, 2014 version 9.2 of BarTender will no loner be supported. It is possible to upgrade to the current 10.1 version of the software with a simple update.

Honeywell Introduces Android 4.2.2 to the CN51 Series

Intermec CN51 Mobile ComputerAndroid 4.2.2 (“Jelly Bean”) for the Intermec by Honeywell CN51 mobile computer is now released and orderable. In addition, conversion licenses (238-000-002) to convert a CN51 from Windows Embedded Handheld (WEH) 6.5 to Android 4.2.2 in the field are also now released and orderable.

The Android 4.2.2 firmware includes Google Mobile Services (GMS), and there is not an option to order these CN51 Android 4.2.2 configurations without GMS.

CN51 Android 4.1 configurations are no longer orderable and are not available for new unit shipments. Customers with CN51 Android 4.1 configurations may upgrade their units to Android 4.2.2 in the field free of charge.
