Honeywell Announces End of Life Plan for VoyagerBT 9535 Bluetooth Barcode Scanner

Honeywell has announced it’s plans to discontinue the VoyagerBT 9535 at the end of 2011
The VoyagerBT 9535 has had a successful life since its introduction almost nine years ago. However, technological advances have been made since 9535’s introduction, which Honeywell has incorporated into the new Voyager 1202g.
The new Voyager 1202g is a direct replacement for the VoyagerBT 9535. The 1202g offers many updates, as well as compatibility with the common Honeywell cabling and software platform, enabling simplified support of Honeywell barcode scanners. In addition, it greatly reduces the amount of versions to choose from, as two multi-interface models (black and ivory) address all discrete interface and extended memory options covered in more than 40 VoyagerBT SKUs.
Vehicle Mounted Warehouse Management
Visual Comfort, a designer lighting manufacturer, was moving their inventory to a larger warehouse and needed a better solution for tracking their assets. Barcodes Inc combined LXE Thor vehicle mounted computers with LXE Bluetooth ring scanners for the first phase of their roll-out. They began using this combination to maintain a live inventory of lamp and lighting parts that are shipped out to assembly plants as well as consumers looking for spare parts. The wireless mobility of this new solution greatly improved the efficiency of their tracking methods as well as eliminated past manual errors.

Streamlining Field Service
Southeastern Cable needed an on-premise invoicing and receipt solution for its cable installers. They were tired of the handwritten work orders and receipts they were dealing with and wanted to keep track of their jobs digitally. Barcodes Inc was chosen to create a solution to make that happen. We paired Topaz signature capture pads and software with Citizen portable printers to overhaul and streamline their system. Now, a signature is captured on-location when a job is completed and it is recorded via software. A receipt is then printed and given to the customer for their records. This solution will help Southeastern Cable accurately track work orders and keep digital records while saving time and eliminating errors from their old manual process.

Puma uses Datalogic Mobile’s Elf PDA to Help Run Its Warehouse
PUMA is one of the world’s leading sport lifestyle companies that designs and develops footwear, apparel and accessories. The Salzburg Branch of Puma in Austria handles inventory management for Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The 154 subsidiaries in these countries are connected to over 500 operators at the central office in Salzburg.
In order to meet the demands of the significant number of subsidiaries, inventory volumes are enormous at the warehouse in Salzburg. Management of all the operations needed to handle the goods, such as stock transfers, picking, goods output, inventory management and quality inspections, were becoming more and more difficult with the outdated system the company was using. Therefore, the Salzburg branch of Puma started to look for a new system that could handle large volumes quickly and efficiently.
Puma found the characteristics it was looking for in the Datalogic Elf. Certified with IP64 industrial protection class, the Elf is a very robust device, an essential feature in harsh warehouse environments. It also has extensive RAM, scans quickly with no errors and transfers collected data in real time. “Datalogic Mobile and its partner, advised us very well, offering us the Elf, which fully satisfied our requirements, all at a low cost to us!”

New York Time Gadgetwise Blog Tip of the Week: Barcode Scanning Apps for your Phone
Serious shoppers can use their smartphone’s camera for more than just snapping photos of the things they want to buy. With a barcode scanner app installed, the phone’s camera can be used to scan an item’s bar code (also known as the Universal Product Code). Once scanned, most apps present a list of places and prices the scanned item can be found, which makes comparison-shopping even easier on the go. RedLaser and PriceGrabber are two apps that offer iOS and Android versions, as does Pic2Shop, which also works on Windows Phone. Search your phone’s app store for others.
Another favorite is Google Shopper which is available for Android and iPhone.
New Nintendo Patent Shows Wii Remote Could be Used as Barcode Scanner
Nintendo has designed several unconventional attachments for their Wii Remote controller and their patent filings were recently unveiled. Two attachments make use of the Wii Remote’s infrared camera, which is normally used to detect the position of the sensor bar for position tracking.
…
The second [patent] invention enables the Remote to read data off of printed cards like a crude e-Reader or barcode scanner. This device attaches in front of the infrared sensor. The device has a slot where a plate can be inserted, which activates infrared lights. This plate includes a vertical slot, which allows light to shine only through a small area. A card with a printed dot pattern can be slid through the guide slot, and the pattern is read one column at a time. Removing the plate allows the Remote to be used as a pointer without removing the entire apparatus.

This reminds me a little of the Barcode Battler from the early 90’s. Using the Wii Remote as a bluetooth barcode scanner is definitely clever, but I don’t think it’s going to put Motorola or Honeywell out of the barcode scanning business any time soon.

Explanation of Many Different Windows Mobile Operating System Versions
Microsoft has created a great deal of confusion with it’s many versions of Windows for mobile devices: Windows Mobile, Windows CE, Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5, Windows Phone 7, Windows Embedded Compact 7, etc.
What are the current Windows operating systems for handheld devices?
Mobile device manufacturers like Motorola, Honeywell, Intermec and Datalogic handheld mobile computers using Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 and Windows Embedded Compact 7 solutions. Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 and Windows Embedded Compact 7 are great platforms to power the wide range of Enterprise Handheld Devices used by enterprise customers today.
Microsoft recommends Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 as the platform when:
- Application compatibility across a wide range of devices is desired
- The device requires advanced security (remote wipe, password enforcement) and device management capabilities
- Voice telephony is desired (Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 provides Cellcore and Dialer capabilities for enterprise handheld devices)
Microsoft recommends Windows Embedded Compact 7 when:
- A high degree of customization and flexibility is required for the device
- The device focuses on a on a dedicated task
Why would I use Windows Embedded Handheld versus Windows Phone 7?
Windows Embedded Handheld is targeted at enterprise handheld devices that run line-of-business (LOB) applications. It’s intended for enterprise users who need a device that integrates with existing enterprise infrastructure, is compatible with Windows Mobile 6.5 applications, and leverages current device management and security solutions.
Windows Phone targets smart phones with a new UI, tools, and application marketplace. It is not compatible with Windows Mobile 6.5 applications.
