Apple unveiled dozens of new features in its upcoming iOS 8 operating system for iPhone, iPods and iPads at their World Wide Developer Conference on Monday.

Of particular interest to those who use iOS devices for light inventory management or asset tracking is the support for custom 3rd party keyboards.

Android has supported 3rd party keyboards for years, but the feature is new to iOS. Third party keyboards are commonly used to offer different ways of entering text, by swiping, for example.

Custom keyboards can be used for more than just typing. They can also be developed with a new “scan” button that, when tapped, uses the camera to scan a barcode and enter the text or numbers from that barcode anywhere you can type: web pages, email, other apps, etc.

There comes a time when virtually any business will find itself outgrowing the functionality provided by Excel. While often useful for minor administrative purposes, spreadsheets are extremely limited in their options and have significant downsides when used for inventory management.

Inventory management is an area that is extremely important for cataloging and analyzing your data. You need the ability to run complex reports regarding past inventory needs in order to predict consumer buying patterns. Honeywell has released the Dolphin 6110 upgraded mobile handheld computer to help retail departments or clothing stores accurately track inventory, increase profits and customer satisfaction and improve order fulfillment. The device also helps retail workers conduct merchandise audits and price look ups, and assist customers.

On the outside, the Dolphin 6110 mobile computer looks identical to Honeywell’s popular Dolphin 6100 scanner: it is light, pocket-sized and stylish enough to look good on a retail floor, the company claims. On the inside, however, the Dolphin 6110 has upgraded technology, including an 800 MHz processor, updated barcode scanning and decoding capabilities, increased memory and a broader WLAN radio frequency range.
