Posted July 31, 2009

Datamax-O’Neil presents a new addition to the current OC product family – the OC3 Receipt printer. The OC3 Receipt printer incorporates a fixed width media holder and spring loaded mechanism inside the printer that allows 3.15-inch receipt media to be easily placed into the printer. The OC3 Receipt printer is the newest member of Datamax-O’Neil’s OC line of mobile printing solutions; the industry’s most light weight, streamlined and ergonomic family of portable label and receipt printers.

The OC3 Receipt printer maintains Datamax-O’Neil’s renowned reliability standard, and offers optional wireless personal area Bluetooth network (WPAN) capability, as well as a wide variety of security options to meet the needs of the retail community. To accommodate the need for faster receipt printing, the OC3 Receipt printer incorporates a 32-bit RISC ARM 9 processor allowing the printer to process complex applications up to ten (10) times faster and enabling the user to enjoy exceptionally high print throughput. For “line/queue busting” applications and easy processing of credit or debit card payments, the OC3 Receipt printer includes an optional built-in magnetic stripe card reader. It prints high quality receipts at 203 dpi, incorporates Flash memory for fast adaptability to changing business requirements, and offers intelligent power management for longer battery life to increase user productivity and efficiency.

Barcodes Could Reveal Your Food’s Credentials

Posted July 27, 2009

BarcodeFood[1]Most manufacturers already use barcodes or RFID chips to track their products. With the help of cheap cellphone and Internet access it is becoming possible to collate data from remote locations around the world and make it available to consumers in grocery stores.

In many cases, are open to the notion that transparency about the source of their food is good for business. The idea is to develop a system to prove to customers that crops are not grown on land recently occupied by tropical rainforest.

In remote regions where farmers don’t have access to computers, they can use cellphones to record the time and place the crop was harvested into an online database. Tracking systems like this should also make it easy to calculate the distance that goods travel to reach stores, allowing consumers to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions racked up by the transport of their food. Heiner Lehr of FoodReg says, “The technology is there. If a big retailer puts itself behind this, it could happen very fast.”
