Walmart RFID Mandate FAQs

What is RFID?

RFID tags are a form of tracking device that use radio frequency to locate, identify, track, and interact with objects and people. RFID tags are essentially smart labels that can contain a variety of data, ranging from serial numbers to a brief explanation to entire pages of data. Certain RFID tags have cryptographic security capabilities that provide an additional layer of verification and authentication. RFID tags are often classified into three categories based on their radio frequency: low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and ultra-high frequency (UHF) (UHF).

How does RFID work?

The three parts to an RFID system are a scanning antenna, a transceiver, and a transponder. When the antenna and transceiver work together, they are called an RFID reader or interrogator. They come in two types: fixed and moving. The RFID reader is a network-connected device that can be taken with you or permanently attached to a surface. It uses radio waves to send signals that make the tag work. As soon as the tag is turned on, it sends a wave back to the antenna, where it is turned into data. The transponder is inside of the RFID tag itself, so it can be read. Based on the type of tag, type of reader, frequency of RFID and interference from other RFID tags and readers, the read range for RFID tags can be very different. Tags with more power also have a longer read range.
