In hands-free mode, the scan range is automatically limited to prevent unintentional scanning of nearby items, while handheld mode extends the range to reach items in carts or on tables. This dual-mode capability, combined with its high-resolution megapixel sensor and Zebra's PRZM Intelligent Imaging technology, makes it purpose-built for lab environments where workers encounter diverse barcode types—from tiny barcodes on microscope slides to curved barcodes on medication bottles.

An optional RFID model of the DS9908-HD is available that combines barcode scanning with UHF RFID reading and writing capabilities in a single platform. This RFID model is ideal for tracking serial numbers, expiration dates, and other critical data in blood processing, allowing workers to read multiple RFID-tagged samples in one pass without requiring line of sight.
