What is the difference between the RFD9030 and the RFD9090?
Read range is the main difference. The Zebra RFD9030 Sled has a nominal read range of approximately 22 ft. (6.7 m), while the RFD9090 Sled extends to approximately 75 ft. (22.9 m). Both models deliver the same 1,300+ tags per second read rate, the same ultra-accurate item-finder mode and the same ruggedness ratings.
The longer-range RFD9090 is also larger and heavier: 9.8 x 3.8 x 6.8 in. (248 x 96.3 x 173 mm) versus 7.4 x 3.2 x 6.8 in. (189 x 83.4 x 173 mm) for the RFD9030. Weights range from 25 oz. (714 g) for an RFD9030 with SE4750MR imager to 28.2 oz. (799 g) for an RFD9090 with SE4850 imager. Choose the RFD9090 for large warehouses, yards and high-bay racking, and the RFD9030 where 22 ft. is sufficient and a lighter device reduces strain.
How rugged is the RFD90 Sled, and what environments can it handle?
The Zebra RFD90 Sled carries industrial-grade dual IP65 and IP67 sealing — dust-proof and spray-proof under IP65, and protected against temporary submersion under IP67. It is tested for multiple 6 ft. (1.8 m) drops to concrete and 500 tumble cycles (1,000 drops from 1.6 ft. / 0.5 m) at room temperature, and withstands ±15 kV air discharge and ±8 kV direct electrostatic discharge.
Its operating temperature range is -4° F to 131° F (-20° C to 55° C) at 5–85% non-condensing humidity, with storage from -40° F to 158° F (-40° C to 70° C). The sub-freezing operating range makes RFD90 Sleds suitable for cold chain work, freezer environments, outdoor yards and loading docks.
Which mobile computers and smartphones does the RFD90 Sled work with?
The Zebra RFD90 Sled connects two ways. Zebra eConnex adaptors provide a wired electronic 8-pin connection for rugged Zebra mobile computers including the TC52ax and the TC70, TC70x, TC72, TC75, TC75x and TC77. Integrated Bluetooth 5.3 connects wirelessly to almost any Android, iOS or Windows device, including the TC21, TC26 and the TC51, TC52, TC52x, TC52ax, TC56, TC57 and TC57x.
An OtterBox uniVERSE case adaptor adds support for many third-party smartphones. Pairing is handled by NFC tap-to-pair, pair-by-camera or Scan-To-Connect, and supported Bluetooth profiles include SPP, HID and Apple iAP2/MFi. Can the RFD90 Sled be managed remotely or used without a mobile computer attached?
Yes. Built-in Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n, 2x2 MU-MIMO) allows over-the-air device management even when no mobile computer or smartphone is attached to the sled, so firmware and configuration updates can be deployed without physically touching every device. Security support includes TKIP, AES, EAP-TLS, EAP-PEAPv2, EAP-TTLS, EAP-FAST, PEAP and LEAP.
The sled can also be managed through Ethernet-equipped multi-slot cradles or via an attached host device, and configured live or offline using 123RFID Mobile and 123RFID Desktop over Bluetooth or a cable cup. Connecting a cable cup to a Windows PC or other host lets the RFD90 run as a tethered RFID reader.

Yes. Zebra RFD90 Sleds are available with a choice of two imagers. The SE4750MR standard-range imager has a 1280 x 960 pixel sensor, a 31° horizontal by 23° vertical field of view and a 14.2 in. (36.1 cm) focal distance. The SE4850 extended-range imager has a 1280 x 800 pixel sensor and dual fields of view — 12° by 7.6° far and 32° by 20° near — with a far focal distance of 15–350 in. (38.1–889 cm).
Both imagers offer ±60° skew and pitch tolerance and 360° roll tolerance. The tri-function user-programmable trigger gives workers direct access to RFID reading, barcode scanning and a third function suited to the workflow.
