Have questions about ID Card Supplies? We have answers!

Does any ribbon work in my printer?
No. Ribbons are matched to each printer by brand and model. Ribbons are in cartridges that will need to fit properly in your printer. Selecting a ribbon by printer model is the best route to ensure you have the correct one selected. Click on our supply finder for printer compatibility options.
What is a monochrome ribbon?
Monochrome ribbons contain a single color and allow printing only in that color. Monochrome ribbons are supported by both Monochromatic printers as well as many full color printers with applications that require only a single color. You will get a higher print yield with a monochromatic ribbon but at the cost of full color printing.
What do YMCK and YMCKO mean?
YMCK is the term to denote that a ribbon is full color with a separate black panel. YMCKO is the same full color and black ribbon with the addition of a clear overlay panel. The clear overlay helps extend the life of the print on your card and reduces fading. These ribbons are the most common as they allow for photo quality print in full color.
Do I need lamination for my ID Cards?
Lamination on an ID Card printer can provide the following benefits:
  • Security: Lamination provides an extra layer of security for your ID Card, by reducing the possibility of counterfeit cards and eliminating any tampering with the information contained in the card.
  • Durability: Lamination provides extra durability for standard ID Cards. Purchasing a printer with a laminating option is ideal for cards in harsh conditions/environments and situations where continual use provides excessive wear and tear on the cards.
  • Cost savings: Although printers with laminating capabilities can have a larger upfront cost, they yield significant cost savings down the road due to the elimination of security incidents and reduction of replacement card printing.
What is a printhead?
The printhead is the component of the printer that heats up the ribbon and enables the ribbon to be transferred onto the blank card. Continual use wears down the printhead over time and replacements will be required to keep your print quality at it optimal level. Faded print and vertical lines where nothing prints on the card are key indicators that your printhead needs to be replaced.
How do I clean my printer?
There are several cleaning accessories to clean the printhead and print path of your printer. Cleaning cards, swabs, and rollers are available to keep your printer running at its best with clear, accurate printing.
