Guest We are a woodturning club library with about 200 items. We want to input a code from a name tag and the item into a database.
Do we need specialized software, or can we make entries into an Excel spreadsheet? Will a pen scanner work?

Excel is a great software to use for basic item tracking and any hand held scanner will work with it. Pen scanners are not very commonly produced anymore but the Unitech MS100 is an excellent model and is readily available. If you were interested in a gun-style scanner I would suggest the Motorola LS2208. These scanners both plug into a USB and communicate like a keyboard with no additional software allowing you to input data into any Windows based application.
