Action Ambulance services uses Fargo HDP5000<\/a> card printer\/encoder with lamination for ID, Security and Marketing<\/h3>\n

The challenge\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Action Ambulance Services provides 24-hour emergency and non-emergency medical services to\u00c2\u00a0the people of Eastern Massachusetts from 13 different locations. The identification cards<\/a> worn\u00c2\u00a0by emergency personnel face challenging conditions, not only from temperature extremes and\u00c2\u00a0inclement weather, but also from bodily fluids, including blood, of patients being treated.<\/p>\n

Twelve years ago, the organization began using ID cards for employee identification, but its printer\u00c2\u00a0was not able to laminate the cards<\/a>, nor was it fast enough to keep up with the growing business.\u00c2\u00a0Mike Woronka, now Chief Executive Officer of Action Ambulance Services, was responsible for\u00c2\u00a0bringing the first ID card printer<\/a> to the organization. He realized it was time for an upgrade of both\u00c2\u00a0the hardware and the software<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The environment in which our staff is working makes lamination a necessity,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Because\u00c2\u00a0I had dealt with the previous printer, I had enough background and technical knowledge to be\u00c2\u00a0involved in the selection of a new printer.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

In addition to printing its own ID cards, Action Ambulance Services also prints photo ID cards\u00c2\u00a0for other government entities involved in collaborative efforts with the organization. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153After 9\/11,\u00c2\u00a0security became a gigantic issue,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Woronka said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We work hand-in-hand with agencies north of\u00c2\u00a0Boston, including the military, Coast Guard, Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of\u00c2\u00a0Investigation, Secret Service, local government agencies and the Massachusetts state police. We\u00c2\u00a0issue ID cards to their representatives to give them access in and out of our Emergency Operation\u00c2\u00a0Center at events such as the 2004 Democratic National Convention held in Boston.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

In addition, Action Ambulance Services uses its ID cards as a means of marketing itself to the\u00c2\u00a0community. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services, and\u00c2\u00a0we are involved with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Woronka. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We want\u00c2\u00a0people to know this.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The cards also carry the organization\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s key strategic objectives, as well as\u00c2\u00a0phone numbers to hospitals so emergency personnel can talk with physicians en route, if necessary.<\/p>\n

Woronka\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s challenge was to find a printer that provided lamination, high quality printing and\u00c2\u00a0quick turnaround. He also wanted a printer that could run off of the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s existing computer\u00c2\u00a0network. A further requirement was an intuitive user interface that encouraged swift adoption by\u00c2\u00a0the ambulance drivers.<\/p>\n

Solution Found<\/strong><\/p>\n

An Internet search lead Woronka to the Fargo HDP5000 Card Printer\/Encoder. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mike was looking for a laminating printer with dual-sided printing capabilities,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Chris\u00c2\u00a0Hills. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He also wanted a printer that could grow with\u00c2\u00a0Action Ambulance Services\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 needs, perhaps including RFID<\/a> and proximity cards<\/a> some day.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153RFID is where we are heading, but not right now,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Woronka. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153With the HDP5000, we can add\u00c2\u00a0that feature some day. That was a key factor for us. The printer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s modular design enables easy\u00c2\u00a0upgrades to card encoding technologies when Action Ambulance Services is ready.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Another important feature was the quality and detail of the printing,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The HDP5000\u00c2\u00a0was outstanding compared to our previous printer.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Action Ambulance Services originally had\u00c2\u00a02,500 names in its database. Now, it prints about 5,000 cards every year. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t real high\u00c2\u00a0volume,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Woronka. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are never \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcoh my goodness\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 crazy, so one printer can easily handle\u00c2\u00a0the quantity.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Woronka also liked the plug-and-play capabilities of the HDP5000. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153If the printer had been too\u00c2\u00a0technical for us, that might have presented an obstacle,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153As it is, we realize we can\u00c2\u00a0grow into its capabilities easily.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The cards are being printed by the organization\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Graphic Arts\u00c2\u00a0Department located in central operations.<\/p>\n

Results\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Action Ambulance Services now laminates its cards to protect them from external elements, as\u00c2\u00a0well as from conditions unique to the job of emergency personnel. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153With the HDP5000, we are\u00c2\u00a0able to process photo ID cards more quickly than in the past,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d added Woronka. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The turnaround\u00c2\u00a0time has decreased significantly, and we can recreate lost ID cards faster. Internal customer\u00c2\u00a0satisfaction has increased as a result.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Woronka\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s background helped him choose the right printer for his applications. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I knew what I\u00c2\u00a0was getting into,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The biggest project was converting our old database. The printer\u00c2\u00a0was able to tie into our old database just fine. After that, it was just plug and play.<\/p>\n
