{"id":6063,"date":"2012-08-08T07:33:10","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T13:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/news\/?p=6063"},"modified":"2019-09-16T08:39:16","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T14:39:16","slug":"ups-puts-ring-scanners-to-increase-workday-efficiencies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/news\/ups-puts-ring-scanners-to-increase-workday-efficiencies\/","title":{"rendered":"UPS Puts Ring Scanners To Increase Workday Efficiencies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"296\" height=\"112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/rs507-1.jpg\" alt=\"rs507 1\" class=\"wp-image-22165\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In another significant technology upgrade within its package handling operation, UPS announced the deployment of a new type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/cats\/portable-data-terminals\/wearable.htm\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153wearable\u00e2\u20ac\u009d scanning system<\/a> for employees that accelerates the loading of packages into vehicles and the delivery of visibility information to customers.<\/p>\n<p>The new device, made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/motorola\/\">Motorola Solutions<\/a> consists of a hands-free imager that is worn on a finger and a small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/cats\/portable-data-terminals\/\">terminal<\/a> worn on the employee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wrist or hip. The ring imager represents a major advance because it automatically scans based on label-sensing technology, allowing UPS employees to more quickly image barcodes compared to the current \u00e2\u20ac\u0153point and shoot\u00e2\u20ac\u009d method with existing equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The improved technology enables UPS to accelerate the transfer of package tracking data to customers and improves package travel reliability through the system. Internally referred to as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153link and load,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the scans are key to providing the tracking data that feeds the 32.1 million tracking requests viewed daily on ups.com.<\/p>\n<p>With the new equipment, the ring scanner sends each package\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tracking information via Bluetooth to the terminal worn on the wrist or hip. The data is then transmitted over Wi-Fi to the UPS facility network and ultimately to UPS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s global data centers to be stored and processed to be quickly accessed by customers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The data captured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/cats\/barcode-scanners\/imager.htm\">imager<\/a> includes two-dimensional and traditional one-dimensional barcodes. These barcodes reside on all UPS shipping labels and contain pertinent shipment tracking information about the package destination. The imager reads the service level and ZIP code and verifies whether the package is being loaded into the proper trailer or air container. An audible and visible alert identifies any package that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s about to be loaded incorrectly to help UPS avoid service disruptions. The two-dimensional imager also has improved the tracking number \u00e2\u20ac\u0153read rate,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d reducing the need for key entry by employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153UPS is always examining new ways to improve our delivery reliability and provide timely and accurate shipment information to our customers,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Juan Perez, UPS vice president of information services. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Effectively deploying mobile and pervasive computing technologies like this allows us to achieve those goals, with higher performance, and a more rugged, longer- lasting piece of hardware.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>UPS began deploying the new system last year and 28,000 ring imager and terminal devices are currently in use at 480 facilities.
