WellSpan Health<\/a> is a healthcare system with over 600 beds in two hospitals and 60 locations in southern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. The company has over 8,000 staff members, including doctors, nurses, and administration, operational and support employees. Both hospitals use Lawson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mobile Supply Chain Management (MSCM) application for real-time data entry of medical supply inventory.<\/p>\n

In 2007, both Lawson and the previous scanner vendor alerted WellSpan that their hardware and software were nearing the end-of-life, and an upgrade would be necessary. The facility decided to stay with Lawson as their MSCM system, but opened up the possibility of using a different model or vendor for their scanning needs.<\/p>\n

The Situation:<\/strong>
\nSince the Lawson upgrade would take approximately one year, there was some time to adjust and test a new hand-held mobile scanning solution. WellSpan was provided with a sampling of recommended devices that were compatible with Lawson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s software and WellSpan staff were given the opportunity to test the devices in their work environment to identify which worked best for their needs.<\/p>\n

To make the selection, WellSpan staff considered several test criteria, including hands-on use, communication range, data security, durability, battery longevity and charging options, ease-of-use and comfort. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We were looking for the best fit for our specific facilities and something that would provide advantages today and for the future,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Patricia Snyder, Manager of IS Administrative and Financial Applications at WellSpan.<\/p>\n

The Solution:<\/strong>
\nWellSpan selected the Dolphin 9500 mobile computer<\/a> because of Honeywell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s support, the ergonomic design and the ease of data entry on the interface. In addition, the 9500\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wireless communications was a big plus as it provided the option for secure and real-time updates of entered data. The 9500\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Shift-PLUS\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 battery performance was another key benefit as it provides 10+ hours of battery performance for extended shifts. Docking stations with auxiliary battery chargers were especially important on weekend shifts, when units would be away from charging and docking stations for longer amounts of time.<\/p>\n

The Benefits:<\/strong>
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Everything is just smoother,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Snyder. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The change has made a real positive impact on how we work.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d While out in the hospital, secure wireless connectivity means that staff no longer needs to go downstairs to the Receiving area to offload the scanner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s large internal memory. This was especially important on weekends, when materials management staff would need to cover multiple floors\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsomething that was not possible before the 9500 arrived. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard from my staff who use them every day, and they love them,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Todd Herbert, Supervisor, Materials and Distribution at the York hospital. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s definitely a win. They were skeptical at first, but they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re really behind them now.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Outside vendors also benefit from the 9500\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wireless communications for real-time information access. The real-time updates of entered data means orders for supplies come as needed, rather than all at once when using the older scanners. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We used to wait until the unit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s memory was full, and it always seemed as if we were taking a risk by going that long without downloading the data,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Herbert. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Using the 9500s around the facility means we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to wait and can enter the data into the system through the wireless connection.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Herbert also notes the significant time savings that has emerged from using the 9500 units. The trips to and from the docking station to download the data would take anywhere from five to twenty minutes each time, with several trips occurring over the course of a single shift. Staff efficiency increased as a result of this time savings, freeing up staff to focus on other activities.<\/p>\n

Because of the successful 9500 deployment in the two main hospitals, WellSpan is adopting the mobile computer for inventory systems in other places within its facility, including critical areas such as the stand-alone surgery center and the dialysis unit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
