We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re starting with a dictionary of Link-OS terms!<\/p>\n<p>You keep hearing that demand is growing for devices that are mobile, intelligent, and connected to the cloud. Did you know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zebra.com\/us\/en\/products-services\/software\/link-os.html\">Zebra\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Link-OS Environment<\/a> was created in response to this demand? The Link-OS Environment is an open platform that pairs an operating system for smart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcodesinc.com\/zebra\/zebra-barcode-printers.htm\">Zebra devices<\/a> with powerful software apps, making the devices easy to integrate, manage and maintain from any location. With all the functionality comes a lot of new business language!<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->To get you started, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve described four terms here. To see the rest, download our PDF dictionary of Link-OS terms, which you can find at the bottom of this post!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application Programming Interface (API) \u00e2\u20ac\u201cAn API is a set of commands, functions, and protocols that programmers can use when building software for an operating system. The functions are pre-defined, so that the programmers don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to write them from scratch. Whether you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re a Mac guy, or a PC guy, all operating systems that run software provide an API for programmers. API\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s are frequently accessed via a Software Development Kit, such as the Link-OS Multiplatform SDK.<\/li>\n<li>AirWatch Connector \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A PC based app \u00e2\u20ac\u201c created via a Zebra\/AirWatch partnership \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that allows you to manage multiple Link-OS devices from the AirWatch mobile device management product. The AirWatch Connector is one in a series of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Connector\u00e2\u20ac\u009d apps Zebra is creating.<\/li>\n<li>Cloud \u00e2\u20ac\u201c If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re using Netflix, Gmail or Spotify, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re a Cloud user already! Cloud applications operate in a number of different architectures \u00e2\u20ac\u201c you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll hear terms like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Public Cloud,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Private Cloud\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u009dHybrid Cloud.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d They all provide multiple advantages:\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to treat computing as a utility \u00e2\u20ac\u201c users only buy what they need.<\/li>\n<li>An overall reduction in capital costs.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid scalability \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the ability to quickly ramp computing resources up or down as needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cloud Computing is huge paradigm shift for IT \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one that devices will need to support going forward. This is especially true for those devices that last for a long time. Even if they are not being used in a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cloud\u00e2\u20ac\u009d implementation today, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s important that they be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cloud \u00e2\u20ac\u201cready\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multiplatform Software Development Kit (SDK) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The Link-OS Multiplatform Software Development Kit enables app creation on PCs, smartphones and tablets supporting the most popular operating systems.
