Datalogic’s Magellan 9800i Redefines Retail Checkout Scanning

Leading the way in retail checkout scanning, the Datalogic Magellan 9800i is the world’s first in-counter barcode scanner driven completely by high performance digital imaging, resulting in the ability to increase checkout performance in the world’s busiest checkout environments. Compared to traditional laser based in-counter scanner/scales, the 9800i greatly improves checkout speeds but also opens new interactions with a customer facing imager to easily scan digital coupons from smartphone screens and traditional paper/card based coupons.

Datalogic’s Magellan 9400i High Volume In-Counter Scannner

9400iThe Datalogic Magellan 9400i scanner is the newest member of the highly successful Magellan family. Along with the Magellan 8400 and the Magellan 9800i it provides the most complete offering of retail checkout in-counter scanners aimed at retailers with very high volume checkouts. The Magellan 9400i family offers multiple configurations including scanners and integrated scanner scales. All models also include the option of having a customer facing reader for interaction with shoppers’ smart phones by scanning digital coupons, loyalty cards, and other phone-based bar codes.

The Magellan 9400i scanner features 1D and 2D label decoding in each plane allowing cashiers to scan products without specific orientation in a more traditional form factor. The Checkout Experience and Today’s Shopper

Even though the first bar code scan in a retail store took place over 40 years ago, many people still active in the retail industry remember when bar code scanning at the checkout was a novelty; not the norm it is today.  Given the $20,000 price tag of the first grocery store checkout scanner – about $93,000 in today’s dollar – the early technology adopters were truly committed.  Although some naysayers probably thought they should have been committed.

Since then, and especially in the last few years, other technologies have been developed and adapted to improve the retail checkout.  These developments are getting more attention today because Retailers are focused on the importance of an improved in-store shopping experience for their customers.  They are working to keep the in-store experience valuable and relevant as they compete with the online alternatives consumers have at their fingertips.
