AirTrack S1 Used for Check-In/Check-Out and Attendance Tracking at Red Deer Public School District

Posted December 12, 2016

Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, part of the Red Deer Public School District, was looking for a cost effective way to check items in and out of the library and bookstore. Additionally, the school wanted to use the same scanner in a different part of their school to track the attendance of their students by scanning the barcode off of their students’ ID cards. Most importantly, they wanted something that was compatible with their existing management and tracking software.

Barcodes, Inc. recommended the AirTrack S1 for both their check-in/check-out and attendance tracking applications. The S1 is a great linear imager that offers versatile barcode scanning and is equipped with green spot technology for good-read feedback. Barcodes supplied Red Deer Public School District with a demo device to test the compatibility with their software. They were more than pleased with the compatibility and performance of the AirTrack scanner. Furthermore, they were impressed to have a great reference with the University of Notre Dame Hesburgh Library. The school district is already working with Barcodes, Inc. on a new project to implement barcode scanners into their ACORN fee management system, which will involve more AirTrack barcode scanners.

Scanner Green Spot Read Verification Technology

Posted November 9, 2016

grrenspotNot all barcode scanners are created equal. Some specialize in reading one type of code or another; some are better at distance reading. The barcode readers from AirTrack are capable of some additional special tasks.

The most important part of reading barcodes is to know that the device has successfully read the code in front of it. This confirmation is typically provided by a good-read ‘beep’. Depending on your environment, it is not always possible to hear the beep. In other situations such as hospital patient rooms or libraries, it is not desirable to have repeated ‘beeping’ occurring when scanning.

AirTrack’s ‘Green Spot’ technology for good-read feedback improves user performance by projecting a green spot directly on the bar code just read. This visual confirmation is perfect for applications where silent reading is preferred or in environments that are too noisy to hear the beep.

The ‘Green Spot’ is also effective when used to target a single code from a group of codes or to position a single code inside the reading area. When AirTrack readers are used in Stand Mode, the ‘Green Spot’ remains on and can work as an aiming system to help position the code for quick and intuitive reading.

ID Security for K-12 Schools

Zebra ZXP Series 1 ID Card Printer System ID Card Printer SystemWhat was once only contemplated for colleges and universities, badging identification for students has now become more commonplace in this country’s elementary, middle, and high schools. While some solutions within the lower schools may not be as technologically advanced as universities where an entire debit/credit system attaches to the ID, the practice still has some very useful applications.

Safety

The tragic incidents at schools like Sandy Hook elementary School and Columbine High School remind us of how important securing our schools can be. Identification of students allows for easier and quicker accounting of the whereabouts of our precious children. K-12 schools have been using a combination of id card badge and printing and a tracking software to track where children are and set up mustering points for evacuation. Zebra ZXP Series 3 printers provide multiple options for printing and encoding and work nicely for many schools with a hundreds of students. Scan Station by Jolly technologies allows for checking in and out at various stations to continually track where students are.  While you can never predict when tragedy will occur, having the right process in place can help eliminate the uncertainties.

Efficiency

ID cards can also improve efficiencies within the schools. Knowing traffic flows and usage at specific points around the campus can help schools understand where resources or infrastructure need to be added. Zebra ID Cards can simply be swiped or scanned at various locations to understand activity levels at each locations. In a more complicated environment, the Zebra ZXP Series 7 offers RFID printing capabilities to track students in real time. Quick action can be taken when activity exceeds capacity in a given area, and it allows administrators to jump in before any issues arise.

ID badging of students can safe time, energy and in some cases lives. Zebra and BarcodesInc have the right ID card solution for any size school or campus. Give us a call to discuss what options are right for you.

Secure the Campus While Providing Essential Services

From universities to primary schools, a revolution in technology is taking shape. The days when mundane tasks such as registration, book purchases, and meal programs required an army of administrators to manage piles of paperwork is but a digital page in today’s history e-books. Twenty-first-century innovation is bringing automation— and a chance to improve security—to the campus.

With education costs skyrocketing, departments at all levels are looking for ways to do more with less—trimming expenses while maximizing staff productivity. Add the looming threats to campus security, and educators must make decisions that balance quality of education with protecting our students. In fact, the 2011 Campus Safety magazine’s “How Safe Is Your Campus?” report revealed that 52 percent of faculty said their institutions fail to dedicate sufficient resources to campus safety and security.

The simple answer relies on the same technology that corporations use—secure smart ID cards. Embedded with “smart” features such as radio frequency identification (RFID) and tamper-resistant laminates, education campuses can realize a wide range of benefits, from tightening security, to streamlining admission, to improving paid services. Read on to find out how you can benefit from smart cards, and learn how your school district can do more with less.
