Case Study: College Retailer Says “RAH-RAH-RAH” to Sleek Custom POS Imagers

Posted April 15, 2015

Motorola DS4801-SR4U0000SGNFans of the Oregon State Beavers know that, when the score is close, a few yards on the gridiron can become very valuable real estate, indeed. But on game days, some of the most valuable retail real estate in Oregon is actually just across the street from Reser Stadium – in the OSU Beaver Store.

Beaver games can bring as many as 45,000 fans to the stadium and many of them will make their way to the Beaver Store to buy licensed gear and apparel. During the four hour game rush, the store typically processes between 3,000 – 4,000 transactions at its 22 cash registers.

“Generally, our customers are in good humor on game days, but moving efficiently is the key to keeping them that way,” says Torsten Pihl, I.S. Coordinator for the Beaver Store. “They line up out the doors, running a gauntlet of crowd control stanchions and registers. If we can save even just a few seconds on each transaction, we can maximize sales while the crowds are here, while keeping our fans and alumni happy.” So as they have many times before, the Beaver Store called on Zebra.

New Barcode Workflows for Nurses

Posted February 23, 2015

2015-0210A creative group of nurses are helping Honeywell uncover better ways to use barcode printers and scanners at the bedside. In the past, it was common to see barcode scanners mounted on workstation-on-wheel (WoW) carts behind the display and out of the way. It made perfect sense at a time when reading barcodes was a new and relatively uncommon task. Today, the frequency of reading barcodes at the bedside has dramatically increased and—with Meaningful Use Stage 2—this trend will continue. Nurses using Honeywell’s Xenon cordless barcode scanner quickly discovered that mounting it in an elevated, forward-facing orientation allowed them to fully benefit from the scanner’s “presentation mode” feature. Just like the built-in scanners found at the grocery store, presentation mode scanning is faster because it eliminates the need to squeeze the trigger, and frees up the second hand for quickly handling items.

Store Clerk Defends Himself Against Robber With Barcode Scanner

Posted February 6, 2015

FamilyMart-Convenience-storeThe uses for a barcode scanner may be quite varied but being used as a weapon to defend your business against a robber has got to be the most daring of all.

This story starts at a Family Mart convenience store in Osaka, Japan at 4am when a young male in his 20’s comes in and asks the 41-year-old clerk for a pack of cigarettes. According to the clerk’s statement, while he was behind the register scanning the barcode on the cigarette pack, the customer pulled out a knife and a bag. The customer-turn-robber threatened the clerk with the knife and demanded the money from the register be emptied into the bag.

While Japan is a very safe country with almost no gun usage, larger cities do have instances of robbery and theft most commonly with the use of a knife.

Datalogic Teases New Product Update

It isn’t clear exactly what the new product update will be from the video below but given Datalogic’s current  line of high performance barcode scanners, it’ll be something special.

Musical Barcode Tattoos

Posted October 17, 2014

We’ve seen a lot of interesting applications for barcodes but this might be one of the most interesting uses. In the video below you can see how artist Dmitry Morozov took his  8″ x 3″ barcode tattoo and turned it into music.  He modded a scanner with two black-line sensors, a stepper motor, and a Nintendo Wii remote to ‘read’ his tattoo and convert it into sound. The length of each bar dictates the duration of the sound and if he moves his arm, the Wii’s accelerometer detects the shift and distorts the tone. Definitely one of the most experimental uses of barcodes in art we’ve come across.
