Digimarc: The Future of Retail Barcoding

Posted January 13, 2017

what-you-see-vs-scannerThere’s a lot of buzz going around about the new Digimarc barcode that will change retail barcoding as we know it. So what exactly is so different about the Digimarc code?

The Digimarc code is based on imperceptible patterns that can be applied to marketing materials, including packaging, displays, ads in magazines, circulars, radio and television. This essentially makes the code invisible to everyone except digimarc enabled scanners and mobile devices. The code still contains the same type of data like a traditional UPC/EAN barcode but since it is imperceptibly repeated multiple times over an entire product package it’s faster, more reliable, more versatile, and more secure than traditional UPC/EAN symbols and occupies zero space on the package.

With the Digimarc barcode, checkout clerks, as well as shoppers using self-checkout, can easily and quickly scan items without having to hunt for the barcode. Plus, packaging carrying Digimarc Barcodes can connect mobile-enabled shoppers with additional product information, special offers, recommendations, reviews, social networks, and more with a simple scan. The benefits also extend to shoppers using self-checkout, providing a faster, more enjoyable, and efficient experience.

The face of barcoding is constantly evolving and Barcodes Inc will always be your reliable partner. For more information about Digimarc codes and how to implement them in your business, contact one of Auto-ID specialists.

Case Study: Datamax-O’Neil Performance Series Meets the Challenge of Small Text and Data on Cryogenic Labels

Posted September 23, 2015

For a leading ISO 13485:2003-certified OEM manufacturer of enzymes, meeting the rigorous demands of commercial entities engaged in the development, manufacture, and distribution of platforms dedicated to nucleic-acid identification is a daily challenge. Enzymes are critical to the performance of these applications, and the industry’s relentless pursuit of higher performance emphasizes the need for analytical-reagent purity and absolute production consistency.

Operating from the perspective that they are “a manufacturing division of their customer,” the company consistently delivers the highest quality and value enzymes, leveraging them to drive customer success via a business partnership model. Part of that consistent delivery means labeling goods so that they are easily and accurately identified when they arrive in the lab.

Problem

When enzymes are manufactured, they start in batches of 50-gallon vats, and then are broken down into small vials as part of a kit sold to research and testing facilities. These vials must be labeled individually; the labels include a great deal of data, two-dimensional barcodes, and very small type. Because of the temperatures at which they need to be maintained, cryogenic polypropylene labels are used.

The Most Common Causes of Unreadable Barcodes

Posted July 15, 2015

image012Item identification and data acquisition through barcodes is critical to the function of automated operations, from ensuring that the correct components are used in the assembly of a smart phone to recording accurate patient data for samples in a laboratory. When poorly-marked or damaged barcodes result in “no-reads” or failures, loss of data can have disastrous effects on product integrity and corporate reputation – not to mention potential legal implications and serious risks to consumer welfare. Understanding the root cause of unreadable barcodes and using technology appropriately to prepare for or resolve these issues is simple to do and it can mean the difference between success and failure in automation. This white paper describes potential solutions for the most common causes of unreadable barcodes, including:

  • Low Contrast
  • Quiet Zone Violations
  • Improper Reading Position

Making Barcode Design Fun

Posted August 30, 2013

Most of the time when we use the term ‘barcode design’ there really isn’t much design work involved outside of making sure the right data gets encoded in the right symbology. Creativity and barcode design software don’t often make it into the same sentence but it’s one area where you can really improve and have some fun with your product packaging.

Artist Steve Simpson has been making the most of UPC barcodes with some very interesting and creative takes on how a product code can be better integrated into packaging design. He even provides some tips and rules to follow to make sure the code is still readable.
