Star Micronics and MMF POS Cash in on mPOS Solution

Star’s DK-AirCash units will enable wireless control of MMF cash drawers, including the Advantage ADV-INABOX Drawer as well as the VAL-u Line Series drawers.

MMF’s Advantage ADV-INABOX Drawer is a robust printer-driven 24V Cash Drawer with Star Interface Kwick Kable bundled all INABOX. This package also comes standard with the patented LockIt feature, a hidden locked compartment beneath the currency till for safe storage of larger bills. In addition to its Advantage ADV-INABOX Drawer, MMF’s VAL-u Line Series 13” x 16” and 13” x 13” drawers (Electronic 24Vdc version) offer customers a cost-effective and compact cash management solution with durable construction and high-quality standards.

Penske Truck Rental was looking to eliminate PCI compliance risk within their business and reduce the number of lost or ineffective devices by implementing a revamped hardware and services platform across the 3,300 corporate and agent rental locations. Due to the complexity of the Penske rental network and number of devices deployed, Penske wanted a systematic way to track and manage the devices, as well as deliver repair and spare pool management services. In addition, Penske required a solution provider to develop software which would reduce the need for paper and allow electronic signature capture as well as integrate the terminals with the existing Penske backend systems. BarcodesInc, through coordination with a software provider, was able to deliver the solution and work with Penske as an ongoing value added partner.

Dedicated Operating System for AIDC?

2014-03-25_0915Automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) and the technologies surrounding it have become commonplace on warehouse floors and in supply chains throughout the world. From convenience stores to major supermarkets or from global shipping centers to your local post office, chances are you’ve seen a handheld device that can instantly scan and share information through phone lines or through a wireless connection.

When thinking about the operating systems behind these devices, one might come to a conclusion that a single operating system would dominate the installed population. The reality is that there are three major variants that are in use in the AIDC space:

  • Legacy Operating System — A platform that continues to be used in spite of its obsolescence and incompatibility with modern equivalents.
  • Mobile Device Operating System — A mobile device OS generally built to support functions (keyboards, email, text messaging, etc.) and features commonly available on mobile consumer devices.
  • Dedicated Handheld Operating System — A operating system specifically developed to support functions necessary for AIDC use (retail floor, warehouses, manufacturing, etc.).
