Honeywell’s Granit Series are an Industrial Grade Series of Scanners

Posted December 5, 2017

When it comes to Honeywell’s Granit Series there are no shortage of options for the worlds many needs. The industrial grade series of scanners are built to withstand the varied demands of harsh working environments. Incorporating the Granit housing that has long set the standard for scanner reliability, the Granit Series of scanners come with an IP65 rating and are built to survive 5,000 tumbles from 3.2 ft (1 m) and 50 drops to concrete from 6.5 ft (2 m).

1280iFirst up is the Granit 1280i, a wired laser scanner that can read barcodes as far as 54 ft (16.5 m) or as close as 3.5 in (8.9 cm). Designed to read virtually all linear barcodes across a wide depth of field from poor quality 7.5 mil paper coders to 100 mil retro-reflective codes and anything in between. The 1280i comes with bright LEDs, enhanced beeper volume, and a vibrating tactile response to overcome poor lighting conditions and loud machinery.

1920iNext is the Granit 1920i an area imaging scanner that captures virtually any direct park mark with ease, along with the standard 1D and 2D barcodes on printed labels. The scanner works by a highly innovative lighting system that allows the imager to optimally illuminate marks of any type and on any surface. The low angle direct lighting provides the uniform illumination required for dot peen and laser-etched marks. An integrated diffuser delivers the soft, indirect light required for marks on shiny, round, or otherwise highly reflective surfaces.

granit-1911iUp next are the Granit 1910i and the Granit 1911i a set of, wired and wireless respectively, area imaging scanners for demanding arm’s length scanning of 1D and 2D barcodes. Both come with TotalFreedom area-imaging development platform that enables the loading and linking of multiple applications to enhance image decoding, data formatting, and image processing; making the need for host system modifications obsolete. They can scan 20 mil linear codes out to 29.5 in (75 cm) without sacrificing performance on 2D codes. The 1911i has a long-lasting Lithium Ion battery that powers up to 50,000 scans per full charge.

1980i-1981iLastly are the Granit 1980i and the Granit 1981i a set of, wired and wireless respectively, area imaging scanners that are capable of reading 1D and 2D barcodes from as close as 6 in (15 cm) up to 50 ft (15 m). With an integrated laser pointer aiming system with auto-illumination, omnidirectional reading capability, and support for centering – users will be able to take the guesswork out of scanning at extended ranges. They can scan low density 100 mil codes at long range and high density 2 mil codes at close range.

RFID Tags Made to Monitor Vital Signs

Posted December 4, 2017

Sensor2IMG_9317The possibility of being able to continuously monitor a person’s vital signs to detect early warnings on potential abnormalities is coming. All thanks to researchers at Cornell University that have been working on a new project. For this to really get off the ground it’ll have to be as noninvasive as possible with no interference of wires and electrodes. With RFID technology that’ll be possible. Researchers have created a new touch free monitoring system that’ll be able to monitor an individual’s breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure all with a RFID Tag small enough to fit in someone’s shirt pocket.

A professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University, Edwin Kan and graduate student Xiaonan Hui developed the technology. Their method relies on near-field coupling. Near-field is the region of the electromagnetic field right around an RFID Antenna with a distance of up to 35 centimeters, or one wavelength, away. Kan and Hui’s demonstrations were able to pick up an individuals’ blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing measures with a high level of accuracy. All of it was possible using a small RFID antenna and RFID tag placed within 10 centimeters of an individuals’ body, and a RFID Reader located up to two meters away. According to Hui this method increases the sensitivity and the signal quality.

In the long term there could be life changing uses that come from Kan and Hui’s research. “There are several potential real-world applications for this, such as the next generation wearable devices, smart garments, healthcare monitoring, and clinical studies,” Hui continued. “The convenience and the high performance could be particularly helpful for smart garments. Imagine if your daily garments were able to gather your vital signs directly, and then report them straight to your cell phone.”

In the short term Kan and Hui are interested in using this RFID technology in hospitals. It could be used to monitor a large number of patients without hooking them up to separate machines and devices to check their vitals. The study also showed that their system could detect up to 200 RFID tags at once, all over the same wireless communication channel.

Black Friday Shows an Uptick in EMV Usage

Posted November 29, 2017

black friday in-store payment methodsThe uptick in EMV usage has increased yet again since 2015’s liability shift. Of the credit card transactions made on Black Friday this year chip-on-chip usage went up from 55% in 2016 to 73% this year, according to Cayan. Magnetic Stripe usage went down from 34% to 18%. This is a good sign as this will likely continue the decline of in-store card fraud because of the safety that chip cards provide.

It’s clear that EMV is here to stay and something that should be included in any standard POS Terminals. Not having an EMV POS terminal could risk the loss of potential clients. See below for some options on EMV equipped POS terminals.

Into the Cold: Cold Storage Mobile Computers

Posted November 22, 2017

Warm garments are essential for warehouse workers to perform daily operations in the cold, the same goes for mobile computers. Mobile computers must be built to perform under these demanding condition.

Moving a standard mobile computer in and out between normal and cold areas is extremely hard on the device even if it’s ruggedized. Short term: the LCD screen fogs up, batteries won’t release enough energy and processors may not perform optimally. Long term: Screens and housing will become brittle and repeated condensation can cause internal components to corrode, short-circuit, and fail.

If you work in an environment that is typically exposed to cold temperatures, consider the devices below:

Motorola‘s Omnii XT15f Mobile Computer
Omnii XT15

  • Lorax Scanner
  • 1/2D options
  • 11 a/b/g
  • Bluetooth
  • Windows CE 6.0
  • Condensation Resistant Chiller Model is built for -4º F / -20º C
  • Condensation Free Arctic Model is built for -22º F / -30º C
  • Screen defroster option

Honeywell’s CK75 Cold Storage Mobile Computer

CK75

  • Cold storage
  • Windows or Android OS option
  • Standard or extended range scanner
  • 11 a/b/g/n
  • 2D scanner (scans both 1D and 2D)
  • Standard Unit is built for -4º F / -20º C
  • Cold Storage Unit is built for -22º F / -30º C

Thriving in cold conditions requires the ability to adapt to the environment. Being prepared with the right resources and equipment can lower operating costs by increasing productivity and decrease equipment down time.
