Case Study: Using High-Speed Communications to Improve Paradise

Posted September 8, 2015

2015-09-08_1053SITUATION

Due to an outdated communications infrastructure and inefficient public and guestroom Wi-Fi access, the Grand Hyatt Kauai’s guest satisfaction ratings were dropping.

Although one of Hyatt’s showcase resort properties, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa was struggling with low guest satisfaction scores in its high-speed Internet service. The property’s outdated frame relay and microwave system was constantly going down during heavy rainstorms, requiring numerous resources— including helicopter service—and up to two weeks to fix problems. In addition, Wi-Fi service in guest rooms was slow, inconsistent and unreliable, especially during high occupancy periods like the holiday season.

SOLUTION

Working with a new service provider and using Zebra technology, the Grand Hyatt Kauai successfully completed the upgrade before the 2012 holiday season.

The Grand Hyatt Kauai worked with island-based systems integrator Pacific DirectConnect, a company highly experienced in the use of Zebra’s leading edge wireless technology. The team installed a high-speed wireless network using Zebra indoor Access Points (APs) and three-port wall plates in guestrooms, outdoor APs for property-wide roaming and an RF Switch (RFS) controller for consistent, reliable coverage everywhere on the resort. The system enables the resort to communicate with Wi-Fi-enabled devices, and the Hyatt corporate platform.

Case Study: College Retailer Says “RAH-RAH-RAH” to Sleek Custom POS Imagers

Posted April 15, 2015

Motorola DS4801-SR4U0000SGNFans of the Oregon State Beavers know that, when the score is close, a few yards on the gridiron can become very valuable real estate, indeed. But on game days, some of the most valuable retail real estate in Oregon is actually just across the street from Reser Stadium – in the OSU Beaver Store.

Beaver games can bring as many as 45,000 fans to the stadium and many of them will make their way to the Beaver Store to buy licensed gear and apparel. During the four hour game rush, the store typically processes between 3,000 – 4,000 transactions at its 22 cash registers.

“Generally, our customers are in good humor on game days, but moving efficiently is the key to keeping them that way,” says Torsten Pihl, I.S. Coordinator for the Beaver Store. “They line up out the doors, running a gauntlet of crowd control stanchions and registers. If we can save even just a few seconds on each transaction, we can maximize sales while the crowds are here, while keeping our fans and alumni happy.” So as they have many times before, the Beaver Store called on Zebra.

LOCFOOD is a modern point of sale (POS) software designed to connect consumers and merchants. Combining the functionality of POS and online ordering, the sleek, multi-purpose solution allows establishments in the hospitality industry to improve order accuracy, increase order turnover and streamline food preparation.

Using LOCFOOD’s solution – which has been developed for web, iOS and Android – customers can browse menus and restaurant information, place their order electronically and be notified when it is ready for pick-up.

The problem

When LOCFOOD began working with restaurant owners, they explained that because their tabled-based POS solution lacked a printer, it would be greener, eliminate paper waste and reduce printing costs. However, merchants explained that it is actually more practical for them to use a POS printer. They expressed their need to print order tickets to the kitchen and receipts to present to the customer. Restaurant owners explained that the kitchen area is too harsh an environment for tablets, as the device can easily come into contact with water, food and high temperatures.
