Frequently Asked Questions

The Zebra RFD40 UHF RFID Standard Sled is a handheld RAIN RFID reader that attaches to a Zebra mobile computer, adding UHF RFID reading and item-finding to a device your workers already carry. It weighs approximately 19.1 oz. (541 g) with battery and measures 5.94 in. H x 3.3 in. W x 6.5 in. L (15.1 x 8.4 x 16.65 cm).

It is used for cycle counting, item finding, planogram compliance, returns and BOPIS in retail; check-in, ticketing, loyalty cards and food traceability in hospitality; and specimen, patient, staff and asset tracking in healthcare.

The Zebra RFD40 Sled connects to eConnex-enabled Zebra mobile computers through an electronic 8-pin connection that supports snap-and-go pairing. Supported devices include the Zebra TC21 and TC26, the EC50 and EC55, and future eConnex-enabled models, including WWAN-enabled variants.

Compatibility is handled by tool-free eConnex adaptors, so an associate can swap the adaptor to fit a different mobile computer in seconds without sending the device to IT for retrofitting. The sled also connects to Windows-based PCs over USB-C.

The Zebra RFD40 Standard Sled reads 1,300+ RFID tags per second — which Zebra states is up to 30% faster than the next leading competitor — at a nominal read range of approximately 19.7+ ft. (6+ m). It supports the EPC Class 1 Gen 2 and EPC Gen2 V2 standards using Zebra proprietary radio technology, and includes an ultra-accurate item-finder mode for locating a specific tagged asset.

RF output is 0–30 dBm EIRP across regions: 902–928 MHz in the US, 865–868 MHz in the EU, and 916–921 MHz with listen-before-talk in Japan. A tri-function programmable trigger switches between RFID reading, barcode scanning and a third function of your choice, such as enter or push-to-talk.

The Zebra RFD40 Sled is specified for multiple 5 ft. (1.5 m) drops to concrete and 500 tumble cycles (1,000 drops from 1.6 ft. / 0.5 m) at room temperature. It carries IP54 sealing for dust and water protection and withstands ±15 kV air discharge and ±8 kV direct electrostatic discharge.

Its operating temperature range is 14° F to 122° F (-10° C to +50° C) at 5–85% non-condensing humidity, with storage from -40° F to 158° F (-40° C to +70° C). IP54 covers dust and splashing water, so the RFD40 suits retail floors, backrooms and healthcare settings, but it is not rated for the directed water jets an IP65 device withstands.

Yes. When a real-time connection to backend systems is not available, the Zebra RFD40 Sled runs in batch mode and stores up to 40,000 RFID tag reads locally. Workers sync the sled later to upload the collected data to the host device.

The sled can also operate independently of a Zebra mobile computer: a USB-C port and pinned connector on the bottom let it run as a tethered RFID reader connected to a Windows PC or other host via a USB-C cable or cable cup. That same connection runs 123RFID Desktop for live and offline configuration, proofs of concept, demos and firmware upgrades.

The Zebra RFD40 Sled uses a quick-release PowerPrecision+ 7,000 mAh Li-Ion battery that can be swapped without removing the mobile computer from the sled. An optional Battery Locking Foot secures the battery in place to help prevent damage or theft.

Charging cradle cups carry two sets of charging pins, so a single cradle can charge the sled alone, the mobile computer alone, or both while attached. Cradles come in 1-slot and multi-slot, charge-only and communication variants — 1-slot communication cradles use micro USB to a host PC, while multi-slot cradles include an Ethernet port for pushing configuration and firmware and pulling device health data over the network. A 4-slot battery toaster and USB-C cable and wall brick are also available.
