Overview

The Zebra ZD421 and Zebra ZD621 share Zebra's modern Link-OS architecture and a nearly identical feature set on paper — but they target fundamentally different duty cycles. The ZD421 is Zebra's premium desktop replacement for the aging LP/GX series; the ZD621 is a mid-range industrial printer designed to sit between the desktop ZD4 family and the fully industrial ZT series. Understanding which is right for you comes down to print volume, media roll size, and the physical demands of your environment.

Print Speed & Volume

The ZD421 tops out at 6 inches per second — fast enough for shipping stations printing up to a few hundred labels per day. The ZD621 reaches 8 inches per second, a 33% throughput increase that compounds significantly in high-volume applications. If your operation prints more than 500 labels per shift, the ZD621's speed and 8-inch media roll (versus the ZD421's 5-inch roll) both reduce interruption time and increase throughput per operator-hour.

Media Capacity

This is often the deciding factor. The ZD421 accepts rolls up to 5 inches in outer diameter — standard for desktop applications. The ZD621 doubles that to 8 inches, meaning dramatically fewer roll changes per shift. For a warehouse printing 500–1,000 labels per day, the larger roll is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade that pays for the price difference in operator time within weeks.

Display & Ease of Use

Both printers feature color touchscreens, but the ZD621's 3.5-inch display is significantly easier to read from a distance and includes a physical keypad — a meaningful advantage in environments where operators wear gloves or want tactile confirmation of their inputs. The ZD421's 2.0-inch touchscreen is adequate for office use where the operator is always within arm's reach.

Connectivity

Both models include USB, Ethernet, and Bluetooth 4.1 as standard. Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac dual-band) is optional on both. The ZD621 adds a serial port option for legacy PLC and industrial controller integrations — something the ZD421 cannot accommodate. If you have any older industrial equipment requiring serial communication, that requirement alone makes the ZD621 the only viable choice.
