Adtran 12008810 Accessory
Adtran Networking Accessory Model Overview
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the RFD40 be used when there's no connection to our backend systems?
Yes. Batch mode allows the collection of up to 40,000 RFID tags with no real-time host connection. When a connection is available again, simply sync to upload the data to the host device.
What accessories are available?
Charging and cradle options include a cable cup, USB-C cable, USB wall brick, 1-slot charging cradle, 1-slot charging and USB cradle, multi-slot charging cradle, multi-slot charging and Ethernet cradle, and a 4-slot battery toaster. Other accessories include eConnex™ adaptors for supported Zebra mobile computers, the OtterBox uniVERSE case system adaptor for smartphones, the Battery Locking Foot, and a belt holster.
Are these sleds appropriate for healthcare environments?
Yes. They carry EN 60601-1-2 electromagnetic compatibility certification for medical electrical equipment, and the Premium Plus imager is classified as an Exempt Risk Group LED product under IEC/EN 62471. Combined with IP54 sealing and a 5-foot drop spec, they are built for clinical and pharmacy settings as well as the warehouse floor.
What industries and applications are these sleds designed for?
Retail teams use them for cycle counting, item finding, planogram compliance, returns, inventory and warehouse management, back-of-store, BOPIS/BOPAC, direct store delivery, and route accounting. Hospitality applications include check-in and administration, event and concert ticketing, loyalty cards, food safety and traceability, inventory management, and field service. Healthcare applications include specimen and patient tracking, hospital asset and staff tracking, patient identification and admission, medication administration, and pharmacy management.
Which regions and RFID frequencies are supported?
The sleds are configured for regional frequency bands: US 902–928 MHz, EU 865–868 MHz, 916.3 / 917.5 / 918.7 MHz, and Japan 916–921 MHz (with LBT). All operate at 0–30 dBm EIRP. Regulatory approvals include FCC Part 15 Subpart C (US), EN 302 208 (EU), and RSS-247 (Canada), so confirm the correct regional configuration when ordering.
How durable are they, and what are the power and charging options?
Both sleds are rated for multiple 5-foot (1.5-meter) drops to concrete and a 500-cycle, 1.6-foot (0.5-meter) tumble spec, with IP54 sealing and an operating range of 14°F to 122°F (-10°C to 50°C). Power comes from a quick-release PowerPrecision+ Li-Ion 7,000 mAh battery that can be swapped without removing the mobile computer. Each cradle cup has two sets of charging pins to charge the sled alone, the mobile computer alone, or both together, with one-slot and multi-slot cradles in charge-only and communication variants, plus a 4-slot battery toaster. An optional Battery Locking Foot secures the battery against damage or theft.
What happens if there's no connection to our backend systems?
Batch mode captures up to 40,000 RFID tags with no live host connection; just sync to upload the data whenever a connection is available. The sled can also be tethered to a Windows PC or other host via the USB-C port or cable cup and used as a fixed RFID reader. For setup and maintenance, the sleds connect to 123RFID Desktop by USB cable, cable cup, or Bluetooth for live and offline configuration, proofs-of-concept, demos, and firmware upgrades.
How fast and how far do these sleds read?
Both models deliver 1,300+ tag reads per second — up to 30% faster than the next leading competitor — with a 40-foot (12-meter) nominal read range and an ultra-accurate item-finder mode for locating a specific item or asset. They support EPC Class 1 Gen 2 and EPC Gen2 V2, along with the Gen2X industry standard. The tri-function programmable trigger gives associates instant access to RFID reading, barcode scanning, and a third function of your choosing, such as the enter key or push-to-talk.
Can we manage these sleds remotely?
Yes. Integrated Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n, 2×2 MU-MIMO) enables over-the-air device management, and sleds can also be managed through Ethernet cradles or via the attached host device. Cradle-based management allows you to set configuration, push firmware upgrades, and pull device health information.
Which devices can these sleds connect to?
They connect directly to eConnex™-enabled Zebra mobile computers with snap-and-go pairing, including the TC21/26, EC50/55, WWAN-enabled variants, and future models. They also connect wirelessly over Bluetooth 5.3 with NFC tap-to-pair, supporting Zebra mobile computers and tablets, third-party Android and iOS smartphones, and Windows-based PCs. An OtterBox uniVERSE-compatible adaptor lets users slide a wide range of smartphones on and off, and tool-free sled adaptors can be swapped by associates without sending devices back to IT.
What's the difference between the RFD40 Premium and the Premium Plus?
Both sleds share the same RFID performance, connectivity, battery, and durability. The difference is barcode scanning: the Premium Plus adds an integrated SE4100 imager for 1D and 2D scanning, which handles difficult barcodes including poorly printed, damaged, dirty, crinkled, low-contrast, glossy, and electronic barcodes on dimly lit phone screens. The imager adds a small amount of weight — the Premium is approximately 19.1 oz (541 g) with battery, the Premium Plus approximately 19.6 oz (556 g).
Will we have to rewrite our existing RFID application?
No major rewrite is required. The RFD40 SDKs are based on the current Zebra RFID handheld SDKs, so in most cases only a recompile of your existing application against the new SDK is needed. The sled also connects to 123RFID Desktop by USB cable or cable cup for live and offline configuration, proofs-of-concept, demos, and firmware upgrades — and can be tethered to a Windows PC or other host as a fixed USB reader.
Is the RFD40 durable enough for demanding environments?
It is rated for multiple 5-foot (1.5-meter) drops to concrete and a 500-cycle, 1.6-foot (0.5-meter) tumble specification, with IP54 sealing against dust and water. The operating temperature range is 14°F to 122°F (-10°C to 50°C), and storage range is -40°F to 158°F (-40°C to 70°C).
What are the power and charging options?
The RFD40 uses a quick-release PowerPrecision+ Li-Ion 7,000 mAh battery that can be swapped without removing the mobile computer. Each cradle cup has two sets of charging pins, so it can charge the sled alone, the mobile computer alone, or both while attached. Cradles are available in one-slot and multi-slot, charge-only and communication variants, along with a 4-slot battery toaster, USB-C cable, and cable cup. An optional Battery Locking Foot secures the battery in place to help prevent damage or theft.
How fast and how far does the RFD40 read tags?
The sled reads 1,300+ tags per second — up to 30% faster than the next leading competitor — with a nominal read range of 40 feet (12 meters). An ultra-accurate item-finder mode helps locate a specific item or asset, and the tri-function programmable trigger gives associates instant access to RFID reading, barcode scanning, and a third function of your choosing, such as the enter key or push-to-talk.
Which mobile computers does the RFD40 Sled work with?
The RFD40 connects to eConnex™-enabled Zebra mobile computers using snap-and-go pairing, including the TC21/26 and EC50/55, plus WWAN-enabled variants and future Zebra models. Sled adaptors are tool-free and easy to change, so associates can swap the adaptor themselves to maintain compatibility — no need to send devices back to IT for retrofitting.
